The recent cold weather that has been sweeping across the northern hemisphere has been causing havoc with those travelling and with road safety. Those wishing to use private or public transport have found it very difficult during this period of chaos. This has caused a ripple effect on many industries as thousands of people are finding it difficult to make their way to work. There is growing pressure also on industries such as the rock salt industry and the natural gas industry. Gritting supplies are dwindling as the cold continues to cause mayhem everywhere. However not every industry is finding the cold weather such a bad thing.
Oil related industries are the ones that are taking advantage of this mayhem. The recent cold weather has had some positive affect on the oil industry after a tough year where the demand for distillate oil products was not great. Oil normally trades at a discounted price and there is usually a higher discount available during months when demand is lower. Usually the reduction is around 0.5% from say November to December. But the difference in the discount from November 2009 and December 2009 fell by nearly one percent.
Even though these signs look good, there is definitely more room for improvement in the oil refining industry. Just a few weeks of cold weather would not be enough to turn this industry around. Experts have predicted that even if this cold weather were to continue as it is until April, it would not have the effect of righting this industry completely. But no matter how long it takes, those in the oil industry must be saying thanks for the cold weather that has begun to head it in the right direction.
Some people spend a lot of money heating their homes in the winter. Gas and electricity are very expensive today, with no signs of prices coming down. Clever people are switching to heating oil as a fuel though. After the changeover they have to make sure that the storage tanks are always full of heating oil to ensure they never run out.
